Stratford Station, West Ham, Greater London.

Jane preceded Wimberly up the escalator by at least thirty yards. When the altercation with the transient became imminent, she assumed her target would flee and walked off the train car ahead of him. Even with whatever his new outlook on life is, he’s still a chickenshit at heart. She smirked at the thought of a homeless man scaring Wimberly into shitting himself. It’s a safe bet that bum has his seat now. He’s not the kind of man willing to take on a sober and competent opponent.

Jane stopped in the breezeway between platforms and examined a large map that showed all the metropolitan subway and rail lines. Wimberly approached from her left but didn’t move toward her or the map. She lifted her cellphone and saw it still had no signal. Have to get above ground to tell the team I’m still with him. No idea how they’re gonna get ahead of us to take over for me. Jane sighed at her lucky misfortune. Andrew said not to lose him, and I didn’t, but now I’m out here on my own.

Wimberly followed signs for Station Street, The Arcade, and the National Rail Lines platforms. Once she had put enough distance between them, Jane resumed her pursuit. I should be above ground soon. Another glance at her phone showed it was still useless, and the predicament reminded Jane of her last conversation with John about their need for additional personnel. Like the man said, he can’t manifest them on command, he can only train them with a very low success rate. His program isn’t like BUD/S, but the old man still fails most of his students.

Jane turned a corner and climbed a final flight of stairs to the ground level of an outdoor shopping pavilion. Wimberly strode west across a foot and vehicle bridge toward another shopping area. In the open environment, she allowed him a longer leash and checked her phone again as she walked. Four signal bars.

“-in, Jane, are you there?”

She adjusted her Air Pods and pressed the talk button for their secure comms app. “Yeah, I’m back online for the moment, and I’m still with Wimberly.” She gave them their location and where they might be headed. “I need you guys to catch up if you can and take over before he makes me.”

“Jane,” Andrew interjected, “peel off and let him go.”

“Why?”

“He confessed to killing Donya Ayre last night, and he named four women to Father Tim and claims he killed them. All four are the subject of missing persons investigations. Tim said Wimberly changed, that he’s not the same asshole that’s been coming in, like he’s more dangerous and violent now.”

Jane sighed and watched her target slow and approach a Starbucks coffee kiosk in the middle of the pedestrian walkway. There’s no place between here and there for me to hide, dammit. I have to pass him, which means I need to change my clothes before he sees me again.
